“When the ultimate information-sharing technology - the world wide web - was invented, it was predictable that it would immediately transform learning.”
-Donald H. Taylor
The Landscape of Learning Technologies
“Conversation is the most powerful learning technology ever invented.”
- Jay Cross
What is a Learning Technology?
According to Taylor, if humans can learn from anything, then anything in our hands can be considered a “learning technology.” Books, paper, pencils, rulers, protractors, calculators, clay, paint, chemicals, rocks…all forms of technology (Taylor, 2017). The definition of e-learning is when computers and networks are linked to support the learning process (Taylor, 2017).
5 Types of e-learning Technologies:
1. Self-Study Lessons
The original e-learning experience…this tech-based learning can also be considered the “click-next” format where the learner learns alone from pre-selected content and materials.

2. Virtual Classrooms
During the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual classroom learning became the main method of learning. In its most basic form, the learning is happening synchronously through a digital streaming communication service. An instructor can directly speak to students, answer questions and share content, slides, and videos.

3. Simulations & Virtual Worlds
Simulation technology can be conducted with any material or tool that helps to replicate a situation (paper-based to computers). The evolution of simulation learning was put forward through the advent of artificial intelligence. Augmented reality benefits the learner with “learning-by-doing” and by receiving immediate feedback.

4. Online Resources
A simple internet search for any information can be considered a learning technology. How many times a day do you harness the internet for answers to your questions?

5. Online Collaboration
This technology tool allows the learner to ask a direct question with responses coming directly from the site host or through crowdsourcing. Help is on the way with the push of a button!
